EVERY FOUNDER HAS A STORY

The Deep End Cafe & Gallery, established by Chicana Poet & Educator Candace Oceania Cavazos, is a brand and business cultivated by the hands, hearts and minds of so many influential people and groups. Oceania describes her own motivation behind the brand saying,

“My father went to prison when I was 8 leaving my mother alone to raise me. She use to always say that it takes a village. While she struggled with addiction for many years, she still made sure to nurture her relationships with people so as to offer me a community of safety and care. I was blessed to be loved and at the same time felt the extreme pressure to succeed. I felt the responsibility to lift my loved ones and caretakers out of poverty and write a more empowering narrative for people born into difficult circumstances with little to no resources. Along the way, there have been times where I felt I was drowning. There were times I had no mentors, no guidance and no resources to help me achieve the goals I had in mind. My community always reminded me of the power of connection, divine influence, and ancestral wisdom. They helped me see new life in the deep end and I found that under pressure is where diamonds are made. “The Deep End” is a place to honor and uplift all of the triumphant, tragic and heroic stories from people and artists that have been in the deep end of life. I want this space to be a place where people under pressure can feel relieved knowing that there is a village for them here. It’s a place where we can validate and remind one another that our stories and creative contributions are worth being revered - and we should keep going.”
